Summary of Position:    The Technical Director of Event & Conference Services (Phillipe Performing Arts Center(PPAC)/Student Center) is primarily responsible for supervision and implementation of all production elements (lighting, sound, media) of all PPAC and most student center related events. The Technical Director ensures safe-working practices, provide production management for the use of the spaces by both internal and external groups. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent relationships and communications with all artistic parties, as well as administrative staff, student staff, and volunteers.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce all events that occur in the PPAC
    • Music Department Events
    • Theatre Events
    • IWU Internal Events
    • External Contracted Events 
  • Determine the necessary technical supports such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs necessary for events and performances as needed 
  • Graduation Ceremonies and related events producer 
  • Academic Convocation and related events producer 
  • Student Activities Event Coordinator (FNL, Rebash; T'was the Night, Spotted Cow, SGA, IGO, etc.) 
  • Produce Student Center internal and external events other than Crema and Worship Events 
  • Visit Day Technical Producer 
  • Produce outdoor events requiring technical support not related to the Chapel Office. (does not include day to day support of the athletic stadiums) 
  • Advance and produce technical needs for Summer Conferences as assigned 
  • In cooperation with other Event & Technical Directors, recruit, train, support a student staff in skill necessary to conduct events 
  • Work with the Operations Manager of Event & Conference Services on matters related to student staff hiring, scheduling, and payroll approval 
  • Coordinate with other Technical Director and Director of Campus Media as needed to ensure event needs and goals are met
  • Work with the Office Manager and Executive Director of Event & Conference Services in preparing and implementing the PPAC/Student Center Budget 
  • Develop and make recommendations to the Executive Director regarding capital purchases of technical equipment 
  • Monitor the inventory, condition of the equipment assigned within oversight including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within the budgetary restraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment 
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies to ensure a safe work environment in the back stage, stage, and load-in areas
  • Foster relationships with industry partners and external constituents
  • Stay abreast of new technology and software relative to lighting and audio
  • Additional duties/events as assigned by Executive Director of Events & Conference Services 
  • This position does oversee and works closely with student workers assigned to a specific event. It also oversees part-time, hourly technicians.

Education

  • Prior knowledge and skills of working with sound, lighting, & media equipment\
  • Certifications are preferred but not required

Experience

  • Experience with lighting, sound, and projection systems

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and sometimes within a very short, restrictive time frame
