Job Title: TRIO SSS Program Advisor

Reporting Relationship: Director of the TRIO SSS Program

Summary of Position:    The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve 160 IWU undergraduate students that are either low-income, first generation, or have a disability. The person in this position is primarily tasked with the mentoring, academic support, emotional support, and progress monitoring of a portion of the participants. The person in this position must be an evangelical Christian committed to the Lordship of Christ—this means having a Biblical worldview and involves transformation in every area of one’s lifestyle. (S)he needs to have strong character formed by the regular practice of Christian spiritual disciplines. At IWU we are committed to disciple-making – to influencing each other to become more like Jesus in every area of life. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet weekly with students in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program for academic skill building and to assess, document and monitor academic progress
  • Meet required and permissible TRIO services by providing:
    • advice and assistance in post-secondary course selection
    • education and counseling to improve financial and economic literacy
    • information in applying for federal student aid, including referrals to the Financial Aid office
    • assistance in completing and applying for federal student aid
    • assistance in applying for admission to graduate school
    • skills necessary for academic success (i.e. time management, study skills, etc.)
    • career assessment and decision-making, including referrals to Center for Life Calling and Leadership
    • assistance to TRIO students with disabilities, including referrals to the Disability Services Director
  • Assist other TRIO staff members with development and planning of weekly academic and financial workshops
  • Lead workshops twice weekly
  • Aid in Inventory Management
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the TRIO SSS Program Director

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Master’s Degree Required

Experience

  • Prior work with college undergraduate students is preferred

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of services which support students for academic and transition to college achievement
  • Strong computer skills (experience in Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook)
  • Dependable; punctual
  • Attentive to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrate respect for all individuals and have positive attitude toward capacity of at-risk students to succeed in post-secondary education
