Job Title: Assistant Director of The Learning Center

Summary of Position:    This position will lead the overall operations of the Learning Center with the Director of Academic Support. The Assistant Director will oversee the hiring, recruiting, training, evaluation, and visioning for The Learning Center. The Assistant Director supervises desk workers and helps cultivate an atmosphere of hospitality and organization at the front desk. This position will also teach sections of the tutor training course. The Assistant Director will assist in developing and implementing preventative and responsive programs in the TLC to promote student success for IWU students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversight of the daily coordination of tutoring services, academic coaching, scheduling, and communication with faculty, students, and other persons of interest at the University 
  • Collaborate with faculty on tutor recommendation and recruitment 
  • Hire, recruit, train, and evaluate tutor staff, staying current with best practices in tutoring and academic coaching 
  • Develop effective desk processes and procedures and supervise front desk staff 
  • Develop alternative academic support initiatives to reach more students 
  • Communicate with TRIO staff advisors and students regarding requests, processes, tutor matching, and tutee support 
  • Assist University and TRIO students seeking tutoring by leading the application and scheduling process, answering questions, and addressing concerns 
  • Work with IT to ensure The Learning Center and tutoring software is working correctly 
  • Collect, summarize, and analyze statistics and usage of The Learning Center and Academic Coaching. Research and maintain best practices for learning centers 
  • Opening and closing The Learning Center for the year. Some evenings required to supervise operation of The Learning Center

  • Master's Degree Preferred


  • Prior higher education classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Prior experience required providing student success services, such as advising academically underprepared populations, tutoring and alternative learning support programs, supplemental education, study skills development, academic advising, and/or assessment of student retention

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written communication, and listening skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and ability to learn Accutrack, Brightspace, and ConveYour (an online teaching platform)

  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Able to be creative in designing a process to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to prioritize
  • Must understand the principles of confidentiality
