Summary of Position:    This leader will advance the DeVoe School of Business, Technology, and Leadership (DBTL) in its mission to offer dynamic business programs that shape students into lifelong learners and equip working adults to advance their careers. Indiana Wesleyan University’s next DBTL Dean will engage with business communities, innovate learning opportunities, and model professional and academic excellence that are rooted in biblical principles.

Serving 3,000 nontraditional students, the DeVoe School of Business, Technology, and Leadership is housed within the College of Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS) that serves over 7,500 students. After pioneering education for working adults in the mid-1980s, the College has a long, vibrant history of providing learners with associate, bachelor, and graduate degrees in a variety of business disciplines. Accordingly, the successful candidate must deeply embrace and articulate a philosophy that is consistent with adult education and innovation.

Ideally, this person will be an innovative leader with a proven track record of success in business and/or academics with an ability to cast a compelling vision for the school. The Dean will give direction to the school’s leadership team while coordinating school activities with leaders from other University academic and operational units to further the University’s mission. The Dean will also ensure that its programs are high-quality, creative, and conducted in accordance with the mission and academic policies of the University and accrediting bodies.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Vision and Innovation
    • Provide vision and lead the School in the development of innovative, future-oriented models of higher education in partnership with business organizations
    • Exhibit a culturally responsive and sensitive demeanor in working in a diverse academic community
    • Maintain intellectual vitality for the purpose of advancing Indiana Wesleyan University
    • Manage full-time faculty including annual review process
  • Leadership
    • Provide high-level oversight to ensure that programs are conducted in accordance with the academic policies of the university and accrediting bodies
    • Provide oversight to ensure that curricula development and instruction draw upon the latest andragogical research and forward-thinking principles
    • Ensure program assessment is conducted with academic integrity, rigor, and agility
    • Interview and recommend faculty applicants for VPAA/Chancellor/President approval
    • Directly supervise the following positions (at minimum)
      • Chair of Business Division
      • Chair of Technology Division
      • Chair of the Leadership Division
      • Director of School Operations
  • Financial Responsibility
    • Provide fiscal management of School budget with a focus on achieving revenue goals and effectively managing expenditures
  • External Relations
    • Work with business and civic leaders across the region to align academic program development with economic growth and development
    • Grow and strengthen the DeVoe School of Business, Technology, and Leadership’s Board of Advisors
    • Collaborate with area and regional businesses to develop a network of opportunities for IWU, including grant opportunities and other outside funding
  • University Service
    • Serve on the College of Adult and Professional Studies Academic Team (CAT) and collaborate with other Colleges, Schools, and operational departments to advance Indiana Wesleyan University
    • Serve as the School representative on various committees, councils, and work teams as assigned
    • Achieve all other duties as assigned

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Preferred: Doctorate in a Business, Technology, and Leadership or related field
  • Required: Master’s degree in Business or related field
    • Applicants with exceptional business leadership will be considered provided they hold a minimum of a Masters degree in Business or a related field

Experience

  • Consistent with IWU’s intentional development of a culturally diverse community, track record of demonstrating a culturally responsive and sensitive demeanor in working in an academic community that is diverse
  • Demonstrated innovative and entrepreneurial mindset
  • College level teaching (preferably online and onsite), particularly with adult learners
  • Excellent team-building and leadership skills demonstrated in a leadership role in a complex organization.
  • Academic program administration experience is preferred, ideally within an accredited program (e.g. Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs)
  • Demonstrated ability to network with business professionals
