Summary of Position: The Graduate Assistantship in Married Housing is a year-round, part-time, live-in position (10hrs per week May-July and 15hrs per week during the academic year, with a full-time training period in August). The GA is responsible for providing administrative leadership, community support, and engagement opportunities for students within a residential area. This position complements a graduate student’s academic experience as an opportunity to apply theory and research practices learned in the classroom to daily student interactions that include advising, counseling, conflict mediation and to professional practices ranging from programming to assessment processes. Graduate Assistants work collaboratively as vital members of the Residence Life team, serving on departmental committees and participating in ongoing professional development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Care Responsibilities
Respond to the individual needs of students within the residence hall/area, providing high levels of care, mentoring, and intervention
Collaborate with all appropriate student care and service offices to promote student thriving
Administrative Responsibilities
Manage hall budgets
Maintain appropriate housing, student conduct, and hall programming records and documentation
Administer all check-in and check-out processes
Professional Expectations
Operate a professional office
Meet on a regular basis with supervisor and other members of the Residence Life team
Attend regular business meetings
Actively participate in GA training and professional development
Actively serve on a Residence Life committee
Submit regular reports as requested by supervisor
Facility Management
Regularly evaluate facility safety, condition, and cleanliness
Submit work orders for building repairs and upgrades
Oversee the assessment and payment of damages
Model spiritual maturity, demonstrating a personal and vibrant Christian faith grounded in a belief in and commitment to Jesus Christ
Model high standards of personal conduct that reflect integrity, responsibility, and good judgment at all times
Foster a positive residential community by being involved and visible in the residence hall/area and investing in the lives of resident students
Support university, division, and department mission, vision, and values
Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
Education
Earned Bachelor’s Degree
Enrolled in a graduate level program and are registered as a full-time student in a graduate level program at Indiana Wesleyan University
Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to accept a new graduate assistantship
Graduate students may hold more than one concurrent assistantship, however:
Multiple assistantships must be of the same type (exempt or non-exempt)
Total number of hours of service provided by the student between both assistantships may not exceed twenty hours per week
Student may not combine graduate assistantships and any other student worker positions
Experience
Leadership experience in Residence Life or related area preferred
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
Required Skills
Ability to work both independently and as a willing and effective member of a larger team
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Strong administrative abilities, including organization and time management
