Job Title: Public Relations Specialist

Reporting Relationship: Director of Communications

Unit: Central Administration

Department: IWU Marketing - Central Administration

Campus Location: Maxwell Center, Marion, IN (This position is a hybrid schedule, which would involve a few days each week onsite and up to two days remote.)

Summary of Position:    The Public Relations Specialist plays a key role in communicating Indiana Wesleyan University’s news and brand identity through high-quality, timely content. This position strategically shares news and feature stories to increase external brand awareness, strengthen internal morale, and support student enrollment.

Blending public relations, social media, and written communication, the Public Relations Specialist helps shape IWU’s voice across multiple platforms. Through compelling storytelling, this role engages IWU’s audiences via news releases, blogs, university magazines, email journeys, video scripts, and marketing campaigns.

The specialist develops strategic content and fosters relationships to amplify IWU’s brand, mission, and enrollment goals. This role supports the Marketing Department’s Communications Team by executing communication strategies and ensuring a consistent voice across all mediums.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates content for internal and external communications from conception to execution and distribution 
  • Develops relationships with external audiences and stakeholders to promote awareness and publish news stories 
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to increase communication and build morale among students, staff, faculty, administration, and alumni
  • Discover newsworthy accomplishments among students, staff, faculty, administration, and alumni and write compelling stories to publish across a variety of mediums 
  • Serves as a gatekeeper for consistency in voice and tone across marketing content, including maintaining the University’s style guide and adhering to its guidelines

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in marketing, communications, public relations, writing, English or a related discipline

Experience

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiences and platforms
  • Experience in copywriting and editing
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally in a variety of formats (e.g., press releases, blogs, emails, social media)
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to learn in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • A degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field is preferred

Required Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively across audiences
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Effective storyteller with the ability to capture an organization’s voice and use narrative strategy to support institutional goals
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a solid grasp of grammar, style guidelines, and editorial best practices
  • Knowledge of internal and external communication strategies, with an understanding of how media supports marketing objectives
  • Strong project management, collaboration, and organizational abilities, with a track record of meeting deadlines
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to the Christ-centered mission and values of Indiana Wesleyan University
