Summary of Position:    The Head Swim Coach must be committed to the Lordship of Christ. The Coach must continually seek opportunities to grow and possess strong character traits through the regular practicing of the spiritual disciplines (e.g. prayer, meditation, Bible reading) and develop ministry values that express what God can do in impacting student athletes with whom they interact. The Coach’s ministry strategy is to serve student athletes and the entire campus by creating a spiritually rich environment supporting community development, quality programs and exciting innovative initiatives. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate teaching competence and integration of personal faith and the truths of Christianity with instruction in the classroom and on the field.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coaching
    • Develop, manage, and successfully coach the sport of men’s swimming including practices, games, scheduling, recruiting, equipment management, reporting scores and statistics.
    • Assist with the administrative components of the women’s swim team including scheduling, travel arrangements and other administrative areas.
    • Manage and operate within budget parameters, without exception. Submit all receipts and budget reports on time as directed by Director of Athletics.
    • Ensure strict adherence to all Conference and NAIA by-laws and regulations.
    • Ensure adherence with established institutional compliance rules, policies, and procedures as well as ethical standards of behavior.
    • Ensure satisfactory academic performance of student-athletes.
    • Ensure the spiritual, physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes.
    • Responsible for successful coaching, to include maximizing the team's potential/abilities, keeping athletes eligible, supporting the spiritual development of each player, and retaining athletes through graduation.
    • Supervise and mentor coaching assistants as directed and approved by Director of Athletics.
    • Assist to propagate a comprehensive public relations program.
    • Manage all fund-raising and booster events in accordance with University, Conference and NAIA expectations, and institutional rules, policies, and procedures.
    • Learn, understand, and adhere to all NAIA guidelines and maintain up-to-date rosters, squad lists and other information keeping compliance as a first priority.
    • Coordinate and develop organized schedules for both men’s and women’s swim teams. Participate in long-range planning and assessment, attend all departmental training sessions and meetings, read and comply with all departmental policy manuals.
    • Plan and implement daily practice sessions.
    • Communicate with officials and officials’ assignor.
    • Work closely with Facilities and Grounds workers to insure proper upkeep of athletic facilities.
    • Opportunity to develop sport camps and clinics as fundraisers and compensation supplement.
  • Aquatics Director
    • Assist the Director of Campus Recreation in oversight and management of aquatics area. Responsible for aquatics scheduling and programming including college classes, swim lessons, pool facility rentals, and special events within the aquatics area.
    • Supervise and mentor all staff as directed and approved by the Director of Campus Recreation. Hire, evaluate and train all aquatics staff including Head Lifeguard, Lifeguards, and Swim Instructors.
    • Work with Facility Services Technician on any service and maintenance issues with the pool area.
    • Review, evaluate, develop and enforce all aquatics facility policies and procedures.
    • Work with the Director of Risk Management in overseeing an Emergency Action Plan for the aquatics area.
    • Manage and operate within all budget parameters, without exception. Submit all receipts and budget reports on time as directed by the Director of Campus Recreation.
    • Assist Conference Services in the hiring and training of summer lifeguards.  Required to be present some evenings during intramural contests and events that occur in the pool.

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.


  • Must have a current CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or must earn the CPO within 6
    months of hiring.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Red Cross Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.


  • Must have some level of experience in coaching (Minimum of 2 years at the college
    level). that includes recruiting student-athletes, marketing, scheduling, equipment
    budgeting/management, and facility care. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is
