Job Title: Scene Shop Supervisor (Part-Time)

Reporting Relationship: Technical Theatre Faculty

Unit: IWU-Marion

Summary of Position:    The Scene Shop Supervisor will provide technical theatre services for IWU Theatre; construct and implement set designs, assume responsibility for stage and shop safety standards, maintenance and operation of work spaces and stage areas; train and supervise students, assist in coordination and implementation of theatre production calendar. This is a 9 month position.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as Scene Shop Supervisor for Mainstage and Student Showcase productions; coordinate and supervise set construction, painting and strike for department productions; supervise the implementation of sound and lighting design/applications; arrange lighting equipment according to design specifications; program lighting into board as needed.
  • Issue, receive, store and inventory tools, lighting equipment, lumber, hardware, supplies, paints, and other materials and equipment; requisition and stock supplies; prepare purchase orders for technical theatre materials; maintain appropriate records; maintain all theatre facilities and equipment in accordance with safety standards and legal regulations; keep areas free from hazards; maintain the appearance and cleanliness of theatre, scene shop and equipment.
  • Supervise the Scene Shop during regularly scheduled hours; train, supervise, and assess students; ensure that tools and equipment are used in a safe manner and that safety precautions and procedures are followed; resolve technical problems with equipment or crews during rehearsal performances; in consultation with Artistic and Technical Directors, research, choose, purchase and install improvements to theatre systems; design and construct improvements to structure of theatre and scene shop.
  • Assist in scheduling the use of theatre by internal and external groups; meet with users to determine scheduling, production, material and equipment needs; set up and operate or supervise the operation of theatre facilities and equipment for scheduled events; assist other users of the facilities; perform related duties as assigned by Technical Theatre Faculty. - (Essential)

Experience

• Set construction and stagecraft techniques and methods
• Theatrical lighting, sound design, and equipment helpful
• Techniques, methods and practices of set production
• Tools and equipment used in set, lighting and sound design and construction
• Proper safety precautions related to work performed
• Record keeping techniques; production and facility scheduling methods

Required Skills

• Construct sets, install lighting and sound for theatre productions
• Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in set construction
• Install, maintain, and operate lighting and sound systems
• Supervise and train students
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish/maintain cooperative relationships
• Work independently; maintain assigned/flexible hours based on production schedule
