Summary of Position: The Executive Director of Government Strategic Relations & Major Gift Officer is the primary liaison with state and federal offices and agencies regarding policy, funding trends, funding opportunities, and education policy that could affect IWU. The position provides counsel to senior administrators, faculty, students, and staff as they interact with government officials. The position will maintain a portfolio of donors with financial capacity to assist IWU with strategic initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement communication strategies in governmental sectors that advance Indiana Wesleyan University's operational and strategic priorities
Foster, maintain, and leverage legislative and regulatory policy expertise and collaborative relationships with state and federal policymakers to enhance the learning and working environment for IWU’s students, faculty, and staff
Represent IWU as an ambassador at events and meetings of strategic importance
Identify opportunities to increase IWU’s profile with state and federal agencies
Provide counsel and assistance in coordinating visits with state and federal governmental officials for university personnel when appropriate
Generate and or assist with communications efforts, including electronic newsletters, white papers, etc.
Develop and maintain a portfolio of selected individuals with financial capacity and influential social networks that can bring a positive impact to IWU. This includes identification, cultivation, and ultimately gift solicitation when appropriate
Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
Education
A master’s degree from an accredited institution (doctorate preferred)
Experience
The ideal candidate shall possess at least five years of experience, preferably with a strong background in governmental relations at the state or federal level
Required Skills
Comprehensive understanding of higher education
Understanding of issues and priorities related to Christian higher education
Familiarity with the mission and function of Christian higher education and policy areas likely to intersect with its mission
The ability to interact effectively and professionally with senior government officials, elected representatives and IWU senior leadership is critical, as is the ability to represent the institution and its interests with distinction at meetings, conferences, etc.
A worldview that is in harmony with the mission and goals of Indiana Wesleyan University and an affirmation, without reservation, of the University's doctrinal statement
The candidate must possess exceptional verbal and writing skills and be capable of communicating persuasively with leaders and constituents at all levels
The ideal candidate must possess a vital personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The candidate must effectively embrace and articulate the mission of Indiana Wesleyan University and be in harmony with the doctrines and practices of The Wesleyan Church
A collaborative spirit to effectively work with key University leaders and stakeholders to foster healthy long-term relationships with the University’s many constituents
