Job Title: Network Administrator

Reporting Relationship: Assistant Director of Network Services

Summary of Position:    The Network Administrator is responsible for operating and maintaining data and wireless networking systems.  This includes equipment from the core to the edge of the network as well as both LAN and WAN administrative responsibilities.  A focus will be on physical and virtual switching as well as management and monitoring software.  Position requires the analysis of both routine and non-routine problems with wireless equipment, software applications, and network performance to identify problem root cause and recommend corrective action. Some interactions may require deviation from standard screens, scripts, and procedures. The candidate recommends solutions to customer questions which may require follow-up or escalation to a higher level of expertise. The successful candidate will handle situations which require adaptation of response or research according to unique customer situations. The Network Administrator may orient, train, and support other employees.  The Administrator maintains as well as creates detailed documentation on process and ensures proper documentation for the problem ticketing system.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, support, and manage data network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points and controllers as well as assist with the design of such systems 
  • Troubleshoot network problems as well as recommend and implement solutions. Escalate network problems to vendor support when appropriate 
  • Collaborate with other IT personnel to respond quickly to network problems when they arise 
  • Work with vendors to design network solutions 
  • Assist in managing the phone system and voicemail system including support for Call Centers, call accounting hardware/software, and other advanced telephony equipment and features 
  • Proactively monitor the physical data network for efficiency using various network monitoring tools 
  • Keep up to date with the network/wireless industry and recommend equipment, software, and procedures with the goal of delivering the best network possible with the resources available 
  • Participate in on-call rotation for afterhours support in addition to providing occasional onsite support for after hours, events

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience is required or equivalent certifications or a combination of experience and coursework
  • Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in Network Administration; certifications are desired

Experience

  • Successful candidate should have at least two (2) years of network/wireless administration experience managing devices such as routers, access points, wireless controllers and switches. 

Required Skills

  • Must be able to use keyboard for extended time intervals
  • Must be able to read, both on monitor and printed page, for extended time intervals
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks in an interruption prone environment
  • Must be able to travel between buildings and floors to access and support cabling and network equipment, as well as travel to locations out of town and out of state to support WAN and wireless networks
  • Inside office work environment, busy computer center, travel to Marion campus buildings regularly, and occasional travel to remote campuses
  • The position is on call for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but these on call responsibilities will be shared with other IT employees with equal training
  • Work outside of normal business hours is occasionally required

  • Cisco systems, Network Access Controls, Palo Alto Networks, VCE, HPe/Aruba Network systems, Dell Network systems, VPN, VMware, virtual switching, firewalls, Internet filtering, Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems, Apache, PHP, SQL, automation using scripting/programming, network design and implementation using Ethernet (copper and optical fiber deployment), CLI based equipment programming, Active Directory, and IP telephony experience
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as working independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize projects and manage resources within a dynamic environment 
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills
