Summary of Position:    The Director of Aviation Programs is responsible for leading the pilot and non-pilot aviation programs at Indiana Wesleyan University. The position will provide leadership of flight and ground instruction at IWU’s FAA Part 141 flight school, training partners, and the university’s related academic and operations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Flight School Business Operations
    • Oversee the business and administrative operations of the university’s FAA Part 141 flight school operations
    • Propose and maintain budgets, allocate resources, and manage working capital and cash flow to ensure economic sustainability
    • This work includes coordinating with university departments, equipment lessors, maintenance, airport facilities, flight instructors, insurance brokers, and other administrative personnel
  • Flight & Ground Instruction Oversight
    • Provide operational control of all flight and ground instruction through the university’s flight school training operations and training at partner flight schools
    • Ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations and standards to ensure safe and consistent flight training standards
    • This may include serving as the Chief Instructor or overseeing the Chief Instructor
  • Partnership Oversight
    • In collaboration with the SEP team, assist with identifying, attracting, and retaining partner flight schools
    • Perform periodic audits of flight school partners, including assessment of student experience, airplane inventory, and financial management as such activities affect the university’s aviation programs
    • As necessary, engage with partners to enhance or remedy flight operation experiences for students
  • Academic & Advising Oversight
    • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide oversight of aviation degree programs, student learning assessment, and curriculum development
    • This includes programs that serve a variety of enrollment pipelines
    • Work with Faculty Support to identify and recruit adjunct faculty
    • Work with Student Advising to ensure students are enrolled and are persisting in the correct courses
  • Liaison to other University Functions
    • In collaboration with the Strategic Enrollment & Partnerships (SEP) team, assist with marketing and admissions to achieve enrollment goals
    • Liaison with the program regarding operational concerns between partners and university departments where necessary
    • Collaborate with the Strategic Enrollment & Partnerships (SEP) team, assist with marketing, and admissions to achieve enrollment goals 
  • Representation of the program to stakeholders 

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • A master’s degree in aviation, education, management, or business from a regionally accredited university is required
  • A doctorate degree in aviation, education, management, or business from a regionally accredited university is preferred
  • The candidate must have the appropriate FAA licenses and certification as needed if concurrent serving in any of the following roles: Chief Flight Instructor, Assistant Chief Flight Instructor, Dispatcher, or Certified Flight Instructor

Experience

  • Required Experience. At least three (3) years of relevant aviation experience (e.g., corporate, air carrier, flight training, military aviation, aviation management, education, etc.) with preference given to those working in or managing flight operations or experiences as a professional pilot, certified flight instructor, or flight school operator
  • Preferred Higher Education Experience. Experience with university aviation programs is preferred

Required Skills

  • Aviation Knowledge. Extensive knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 141, 61, and other standards
  • Academic Knowledge. A thorough awareness of higher education academic and administrative processes
  • Leadership. Significant capacity to develop and lead a team and complex processes as initiatives scale
  • Interpersonal Relationships. Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues who represent a diversity of work and conflict resolution styles
  • Communication. Superior ability to communicate in all forms (e.g., verbal and written) and modicums (e.g., electronic, in-person, or otherwise)
  • Project Management. Ability to manage multiple, complex projects through a combination of systems and agile thinking
  • Technology. Proficient skills in Microsoft Suite of applications, and experience in enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, data analytics, flight school student information systems, and project management tools are preferred
