Job Title: Upward Bound Summer Instructor

Reporting Relationship: Assistant Director

Unit: Central Administration

Department: Upward Bound-Central Administration

Campus Location: Barnes Student Center

Summary of Position:    The Upward Bound Program is seeking the following Summer Instructors:
Core subject areas available: math, laboratory sciences, foreign language, English composition and literature. Elective classes are based on need or potential learning experience. Examples of elective classes include but not limited: art, theater, robotics, finance, physics, nutrition, fitness, photography, life skills and etiquette with the ability to teach Culinary, Art, Swimming, Pottery, Business, Agriculture or Dance. If interested in an elective class, contact the Upward Bound Staff with your idea of a topic

• One (1) Elective Instructor

• One (1) Math Instructor to instruct 2 math courses

• One (1) English/Composition instructor

• One (1) Science/Lab Instructor to instruct

• One (1) Foreign Language Instructor

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruct high school students in conjunction with state standards
  • Prepare lesson plan format for each class session
  • Submit attendance, student evaluations and lesson plans to Assistant Director 
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits including meeting required deadlines, attending staff meetings as scheduled, and implementing instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences 

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required and must be certified by the State of Indiana to teach at the high school level in your certified subject areas

Experience

  • Experience providing instruction in classroom setting
  • Preferred: Working with high school students in an educational capacity
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of Indiana Content Standards in subject of instruction
  • Preferred: Life experience with barriers similar to those from TRIO target populations, including but not limited to being a member of an underrepresented group in higher education, being a first-generation student, being from a low-income family, or having a disability

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of effective instructional methods and practices
  • Ability to develop assessments and monitor student progress
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage details and follow through
  • Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder
  • Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel
