Summary of Position:    The primary responsibilities of the Athletic Trainer is to assist the Head Athletic Trainer with day-to-day operation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of the athletic training program as it relates to athletic injury management and intercollegiate athletics medical coverage. The Athletic Trainer shall be a full-time employee of Indiana Wesleyan University and be a member of the full-time staff as defined by school policy. The Athletic Trainer will serve as a Clinical Preceptor for the Athletic Training Program. This involves supervision and clinical education of athletic training students, and serve as a member of the ATP Admission Committee if selected by the ATP Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide athletic training services for intercollegiate athletes / sports as determined by the Head Athletic Trainer 
  • Serve as a Clinical Preceptor the Athletic Training Program and assist the Clinical Education Coordinator in the supervision and clinical education of athletic training students with various intercollegiate clinical experiences 
  • Act as a liaison between his/her assigned intercollegiate head coaches and the team physician 
  • Assist Head AT with supervision of the daily operational procedures of the athletic training clinics and facilities
  • Assist Head AT with scheduling and administration of routine team physician visits for injured intercollegiate athletes 
  • Provide insight, rationale and personal preferences concerning organization and the purchasing of medical supplies / equipment for athletic training facilities
  • Assist with organization and maintenance of medical supplies / equipment inventory 
  • Assist in the organization and conduction of pre-participation physicals and paperwork for all intercollegiate athletes 
  • Maintain an accurate health care account of all intercollegiate athletes. Document all athletes that have been evaluated, treated, and rehabilitated in the athletic training facilities and ensure that the appropriate records are properly completed and/or uploaded onto the electronic medical records system. Properly and timely, file any appropriate claims with the secondary insurance company 
  • Prepare, with the team physician, hardship petitions in accord with guidelines established by the NAIA and Crossroads League for qualified student-athletes 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and work to create an environment of quality and innovation 
  • Participate as requested in committees, councils or professional organizations that pertain to this position. Attendance at university chapel services is encouraged 
  • Acting within scope of practice, counsel with students and refer as necessary regarding personal, emotional, academic, or spiritual hardships/problems 
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with Indiana Wesleyan University's mission and goals. Support the policies of the student handbook with integrity 
  • Work within the Athletic Department and ATP to foster an environment of cooperation and unity

  • The Athletic Trainer must be able to demonstrate teaching competence and integration of personal faith and the truths of Christianity while instructing in the classroom and during clinical experiences

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.


  • Bachelor's degree with at least one (1) year of professional experience as an athletic trainer required
  • Master's degree and collegiate experience preferred
  • Previous experience in clinical supervision of athletic training students is also desired


  • Must have current BOC recognition as a certified athletic trainer
  • Indiana licensure is required. The licensure process should be started, if not already secured, once the successful candidate has accepted the position
  • Continue the following membership/certifications:
    Board of Certification
    National Athletic Trainers' Association
    Indiana Professional Licensing Agency
    Clinical Preceptor Training
    Healthcare provider level CPR certification
